Blight of Blackridge

A cutthroat survival horror card game

In the town of Blackridge, blood buys bread, and the only thing more dangerous than the beasts in the dark are the hunters at your side.

Move your lantern. Something’s out there.

How it plays

Every day in Blackridge

You’re mercenaries hunting the horrors of a cursed frontier, and each other. Every turn is one day, and every day goes like this.

  1. An event

Each day begins with an event. Players bid items to compete for the reward. Only the highest bidder benefits, while the rest face the consequences.

    • Pass: sit it out (not allowed on mandatory events).
    • Bid: cards go face down. Corrupted items go in sideways.
    • Partner up: pool your bid with others and split the reward.
  2. Meal time

After the event, everyone must discard a Ration. No ration? You take a Corruption card instead.

  3. Resupply

Then each player draws an item. Roll a die: 1–2 is a ration, 3–4 a tool, 5–6 a weapon.

The cycle continues until only the strongest remain. If more than one of you is still standing when the events run out, whoever holds the fewest Corruption and Damage cards wins.

The bounty board

Something new every day

Creatures are the main threats: skip one or fail to kill it and you’ll pay for it, but defeating one pays a bounty. Shops trade one item for another. Incidents are mandatory. Everyone plays. Click a card to read it up close.

Hand management

Your hand is your health

Every player has 10 slots for weapons, tools and rations, and for the Corruption and Damage that pile up. Corruption can be cleared with the right items; Damage never goes away. When your hand holds nothing but Corruption and Damage you’re blighted, and when it holds nothing but Damage you’re dead. Pick a loadout and see how long you last.

Choose a loadout to start.

Corruption

The corruption that plagues the land

Corruption cards take up inventory slots. Once your hand holds nothing but Corruption and Damage, you’re blighted, and blighted players can play their Corruption cards: some deal damage like a weapon, others work like a tool. A hand of nothing but Damage means you’re dead.

How it gets in

  • Meal time

After an event, players must discard a Ration. If a player has no Ration, they take a Corruption card instead.

  • Corrupted abilities

Most weapons and tools have a corrupted ability. The Lever Action deals 3 damage; corrupted, it deals 5 and you gain a Corruption.

  • Losing to a creature

Blackwater Bog Beast: all non participating players or ones who have lost the bet gain 2 corruption.

  • Bluffing

If a card is bluffed as being corrupted, you take the corruption listed on the card. If there is none, you take 1 corruption.

How to get it out

  • Tonic

When using this at meal time there is a chance it removes a corruption. 5-6: remove a corruption.

  • Ritual Knife

Winning the bet on a creature event removes a corruption.

  • Snake Oil Salesman

Buy low quality snake oil to remove 1 corruption, or high quality snake oil to remove 2.

  • Chickens Foot

Play a corruption card from your hand face down. After the event is concluded the corruption card is discarded.

Once you’re blighted

Blighted players can play these. Pick a Corruption card from the hand to see what it does.

Violent corruption card

Deals damage

Violent

Deals 2 damage.

Played like a weapon.

The story

Made in 24 hours

Blight of Blackridge was created for a Blackthornprod video as part of a 24-hour game development challenge. The goal was to design a survival horror game within the time limit. The result is a thrilling and chaotic experience centered around betting, deception, and screwing over your friends.
